Am considering purchasing a B21 to reside happily next to my Ford 1710. How is possible if at all to use the brakes to help steer when the hydropedal and the brakes are on the same side?The John Deere system looks far more sensible (and useable) but can'tfind anything as well structured for backhoe use as that B21.How are you guys (and gals!) overcoming this?thanks to all

Del, there's been a lot of discussion about this matter on other discussion boards. About the only way the brakes can be used for steering is if you are also using the cruise control at the same time. If that's an important consideration for you, you might want to look more at other brands. I like the Kubota arrangement; I just never use the brakes for steering. ....

After using old tractors, I also felt it was necessary for a tractor to have the independent brakes mounted on the "appropriate" side. But our JD4100 turns very sharp, and very seldom do I feel the need to use them on this unit. I will agree with your comment about Kubota's brake setup, but most orange owners seem to defend the setup as if its somehow convenient to set the cruise while trying to turn from a dead stop?? I don't know..I'm still trying to figure that one out. Regardless, I wouldn't let this be a show stopper. Kubota is definitely a good unit, it would be my choice if I needed a back-hoe. ....

Del, steering a tractor with the brakes is a problem with the kubotas and all makes except for the JD's could it be that they have a balance problem and that is why they offer them. I sell large farm equipment and the farmers aren't useing them much any more if at all. the other problem is there is no equal to the B21 or L35 that has been built to date. The other side of the brake issue is the more you use them under power the faster you will were them out and of coarse your freindly J.D. dealer will love the added service work at your expense. ....

Each to his own, I suppose. People that have never used them, say you don't need them. Me, I use them ALL the time. Just the other day, plowing the garden, used the left one to keep the tractor going straight. Use them when attaching implements all the time. Use them to make 90 degree turns when mowing the fields. I would be lost without them. I suppose it is because I've become accustomed to using them. If I had grown accustomed to backing up more often, that would probably work for me also.I double wet brakes will ever wear out in my lifetime. Also doubt that Deere makes them usable because the machine is "out of balance". Just a good design is all. But again, not a "make or break" factor though, in my opinion.Chris ....

I farmed for many years. I would not have a tractor without brakes to steer. Many times a heavy load on the back requires brakes to steer effectively. I also doubt that it wears the brakes out since anyone who has used brakes to steer knows that you barely have to touch the brakes to cause the front to move when there is a load on the back. This is obviously a battle of preference over JD and Kubota. ....

It really depends on what your intended use is for the tractor. I've owned 2 B21 TLBs,and have never touched the brake except to set parking brake.I usr the hoe quite often and in tight areas can use the hoe to stear the back.My little B21 makes me a living day in day out in landscaping,excavating and I'm sure if you've checked the rest you have to admit KUBOTA is by far the best CTLB ,power ,balanced (full integrated frame front to back),predictable,fuel economy,this thing will push into a pile like a dozer in low gear.I've got 6000 hrs on my 91 B20. ....
